Hi! I'm Paul.

I’m the founder of Type One Outdoors, and have been T1D for 36 years now.
I’ve been hiking the mountains of Southern California for a number of years now, and have extensive knowledge of the trails throughout the San Gabriel Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains, Santa Monica Mountains, the Angeles National Forest, Mojave Desert and the Eastern Sierras.
I’ve endured all that diabetes can throw at a diabetic in the backcountry, and I’m on a mission to share all mt tips and tricks to all type ones who want to know how to be a type one in the outdoors!
I am certified with the American Mountain Guides Association and a NOLS certified Wilderness First Responder.

Give yourself plenty of time to reach the summit, some parts can be steep and really burn up your blood sugar.
Hydrate and refuel as much as needed.
There's a few trail splits.
This one connects the loop clockwise or counterclockwise.
The trail follows a wide, gravel service road all the way up.
It can be hiked as an out-and-back or a loop either clockwise or counterclockwise.
There's a few splits in the trail, so be sure to know the route or ask others if needing directions to Tongva Peak.
There's two peaks with antennas, Mt Thom and Tongva Peak.
Tongva Peak is the peak with the antennas to the west.
The summit plateau is accessed by walking a narrow edge next to the chain-link fence around the antenna farm.
There's a bench with a summit marker at the top of Tongva Peak.
Perfect spot for a group selfie with a summit toast or a summit Panorama.

And of course,
Don't forget the camera!

To make this a loop-hike, follow the road the opposite direction the way you came, either to the left of the antenna installation or to the right.
Pay close attention to the road, it will have splits and turns and can easily send you on the wrong track.

What to Bring

T1D items in red

Pack:
– A small, 8 – 10 liter day pack will be fine. 
– A running vest also works for those who travel fast and light.

Water:
– 1 liter will be plenty
– A 20 oz bottle of Gatorade (full sugar) can take care of most your water and glucose needs.

Camera:
Any kind of camera will do (SLR, iPhone, Polaroid)

Footwear:
– Trail Runners (PERFECT)
– Road Running shoes (GREAT)
– Hiking Boots (OK but MAY BE OVERKILL)

Exposure Protection:
– Hat (cap will be fine)
– Chapstick or Carmex
– Buff / Bandanna (optional)
– Sunglasses 
– Beanie (in case it gets cold)
– Light gloves (it gets cold on cloudy days)
– Poncho (winter)
– Wind shell (winter)
– Long sleeve mid-layer (winter)

Trail Glucose:
(Yes! this trail will burn your blood sugar)
– Trail treats… Things that can fit in your pockets but won’t melt
– Light snack (like an apple or trail mix)
– Energy Gels
– Starburst
– Glucose Tabs

Clothing:
-In summer: Shorts and t-shirt.

– Sports shirt (moisture wicking)   … you might get sweaty even in the winter.
– Hiking pants (year round)
– Shorts are fine in summer.
– Alpine shell (only in winter)

Trekking Poles:
– Not necessary but helpful on the descent.

Backup T1D items:
– Backup Glucose meter + strips
– CGM (optional)
– Backup insulin
– Pocket glucose (non-melting)

We will be visitors in a protected natural ecosystem, so we will practice Minimal Impact Principles.
Whatever we pack in, we will be packing out.
Feel free to bring an extra ZipLoc bag for collecting litter.
Leave rocks, trees, wildlife undisturbed.

Trek Waiver

This release basically acknowledges that you understand risks involved with the activity you are signing up for.

Understanding that any outdoor activity comes with inherent risks of injury and even death in the most extreme cases.

You are also agreeing not to do things that may jeopardize the safety of the guide or other participants.

You are agreeing that you will not adversely interfere with the natural environments we will be using (other than normal use of the trails, equipment and infrastructure) This includes wildlife, sensitive ecosystems, manmade structures, maintained trails, markers, safety devices, safety structures, and personnel.

Since you are signing up to join us on this activity, you are doing so at your own will and you understand all the risks involved. (if you don’t, please ask. If you still don’t, Please don’t sign) You’re also agreeing to let your leader know if you have any medical condition that needs to be disclosed before we set out, and you agree to prepare yourself adequately before the activity and be as self sufficient as possible as not to be an adverse burden upon the rest to the party or strangers.

You’re agreeing to indemnify, and to hold Type One Outdoors and its guides, drivers, agents, associates, employees, owners, volunteers, leaders, affiliates, helpers, and participants harmless and promise not to sue.

We take lots of photos on these treks, and participants usually wind up in the pictures shared on Type One Outdoors social media, and web pages in efforts of promoting future and past activities, trips and events.
